From Inquiry to Loading: The First Stretch
The clock buyers care about starts at inquiry, but the early stage depends on you as much as on us. Choosing the car, inspecting it, and clearing payment against documents usually takes several days to a couple of weeks, depending on how quickly decisions and bank transfers happen. After that, the car is de-registered for export and booked onto a vessel from Incheon or Busan. RoRo sailings to common destinations run on a schedule, so there may be a short wait for the next suitable departure. Being responsive at the front end is the single biggest thing you can do to get your car loaded sooner rather than later.
Ocean Transit Times by Region
Once loaded, transit time is mostly a matter of distance and routing. Sailings to Southeast Asian ports are relatively quick, often a couple of weeks, while voyages to the Gulf, the Indian subcontinent, or East Africa take longer and may involve transshipment. Routes to the west coast of South America or to the Caribbean are longer still. These are realistic ranges, not promises, because weather, port congestion, and connecting vessels all shift schedules. We give you the booked vessel and an estimated arrival, and we tell you when transshipment is involved, since a change of ship mid-route naturally adds days and an extra handling point to watch.
How Vessel Tracking Actually Works
After loading you will have the vessel name and voyage number, which are your keys to tracking. Shipping lines publish schedules and updates on their own portals, and public vessel-tracking sites show a ship's live position by name. Bear in mind that a RoRo vessel may call at several ports before yours, so seeing it dock elsewhere first is normal. Tracking tells you roughly where the ship is, not the exact hour your car lands. Use it to anticipate arrival within a window and to confirm there are no major delays, then rely on your destination agent for the precise berthing and discharge timing.
The Bill of Lading and Release Timing
The Bill of Lading is issued shortly after loading and governs when and how the car is released at destination. Whether you receive an original B/L that must be couriered, or a telex release confirmed electronically, affects how fast your broker can collect the car. We always send a draft B/L to check the consignee details and VIN before it is finalized, because corrections after issue are slow. Sorting release type early, original versus telex, prevents a frustrating situation where the ship has arrived but the paperwork to claim the car has not. Align this with your broker before the vessel sails, not after.
Avoiding Demurrage and Storage Charges
Demurrage and storage are the costs that quietly ruin a good deal. They accrue when a car sits at the destination port beyond the free period because clearance was not ready. The fix is preparation: appoint your customs broker early, send them the full document set in advance, arrange funds for duty before arrival, and confirm any required pre-shipment inspection was done. If your country needs particular certificates, have them in hand. Most demurrage we see was avoidable, caused by waiting until the ship docked to start clearance. Treat the estimated arrival date as your deadline to be fully ready, and these charges rarely appear.
Planning Realistically and Communicating Early
The buyers who have the smoothest experience treat shipping as a process with a range, not a fixed date. Add buffer to every estimate, keep your broker informed of the vessel and voyage, and ask us whenever a schedule shifts.
